VOD: connecting content, product and day-to-day operations

A planning framework for teams preparing to organise and distribute a video catalogue.

Planning guidance to adapt to your project. These considerations are neither a revenue forecast nor legal advice.

Think beyond the player

A video-on-demand project often starts with a question about a player or hosting. Yet the service also depends on work before and after playback: selecting content, writing descriptions, checking permissions, answering questions and maintaining the catalogue. To design something workable, describe those tasks with the people who will actually perform them.

Give the catalogue a useful structure

A collection can be organised by theme, series, language, level or duration. Choose a structure that matches the audience’s questions, then prepare the metadata it needs. Clear titles, consistent descriptions and language information let viewers choose without opening every video. Avoid multiplying empty categories; a small, clearly presented selection is a useful starting point for learning.

Connect publishing and maintenance

Decide who can prepare an entry and who approves publication. Plan a draft state, a playback check and a removal procedure. Document availability dates and permitted territories where your catalogue requires them. When content changes, the team needs to find the entry, its files and the places that promote it.

Observe problems you can act on

Choose a few questions before defining measurements: can visitors find suitable content, start playback and avoid errors? Include direct support feedback. An indicator needs context: leaving a video may reflect a technical problem, an unmet expectation or simply the wrong content. Keep collection proportionate to the purpose and have applicable requirements reviewed.

Scope a first version the team can operate

To begin, assemble a representative catalogue sample, supported devices, an access journey and the editorial task list. Add support responsibilities and expected recurring costs. Negomedias can assist with this planning and platform design. A useful initial scope is one your team can publish, check and maintain with the resources available.
