Choosing a revenue model for a VOD platform
A practical way to compare subscriptions, rentals and advertising before building your offer.
Planning guidance to adapt to your project. These considerations are neither a revenue forecast nor legal advice.
Start with the value of the catalogue
Before choosing a monthly payment, describe what viewers come back for: a regular programme, an event, a course or a collection to explore. A catalogue visited occasionally needs a different discussion from a weekly release schedule. Put publishing frequency, the duration of content rights and editorial costs in the same planning document.
Compare three options before combining them
A subscription provides recurring access to a collection. It needs an understandable proposition and an editorial plan that sustains interest. Individual rental or purchase suits a defined offer: the viewer can understand what they are selecting and for how long. Advertising-supported access introduces separate decisions about inventory, partners, playback experience and data handling. No model guarantees revenue.
Write assumptions before the forecast
Build a working scenario with your proposed price, payment fees, delivery and support costs, acquisition spending and obligations to rights holders. Separate observed amounts from estimates. Also consider a low-traffic scenario: an offer that depends on an unproven volume deserves a more cautious initial scope.
Test the whole journey
Before adding several price plans, ask representative users to try one complete offer. Can they understand the price, create access, play a video and find the conditions of their purchase? Check less convenient situations too: declined payment, a shared device, a refund request and interrupted playback. Record hesitation as well as clicks.
A useful starting brief
Prepare a short list: intended audience, available content, rights to check, publishing rhythm, territories, priority devices and operating budget. Negomedias can help turn that brief into a user journey and technical scope. Validate pricing, sales conditions and distribution rights with the appropriate advisers before publication.
